Mitigation Resources
Mitigation Overview
There are effective and scientifically proven methods to mitigate your home against some of Colorado’s most common natural hazards: wildfire and hail. Here you will find information on how the Colorado FAIR Plan educates consumers on steps they can take to “harden” their homes against natural disasters, along with other key resources.
Wildfire Risk Scores
The Colorado FAIR Plan uses a property-specific wildfire risk model from ZestyAI, Z-FIRETM, to evaluate wildfire risk for each insured property. Z-FIRE provides two risk scores. The Level 1 score is a community-level score; the Level 2 score is a property-level score. Each score is on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being the lowest risk and 10 being the highest. In addition to the two scores Z-FIRE also provides the top three factors contributing to each score.
Applicants or policyholders who believe their wildfire risk score may not accurately reflect current property conditions may request a review by submitting supporting documentation to the Colorado FAIR Plan.
Wildfire risk scores are used alongside other underwriting, actuarial, and regulatory factors in determining premiums. The Colorado FAIR Plan does not provide discounts for individual mitigation actions taken; however, verified changes that materially affect wildfire risk may be considered as part of the FAIR Plan’s rating process.
Mitigation Resources
There are several resources to help you understand and implement mitigation strategies. A well-mitigated property is the best path away from the Colorado FAIR Plan and toward standard-market coverage with better coverage and generally lower costs.
